Champion of The Golden Thread

Background: Grenfell Tower Fire

The Grenfell Tower fire occurred on the 14th June, 2017, in West London, resulting in the tragic loss of 72 lives and raising serious concerns about building safety standards in the UK. The fire spread rapidly due to the building's combustible cladding, highlighting critical flaws in the existing building regulations and safety practices. The disaster prompted an urgent need to review and overhaul the regulatory framework to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Dame Judith Hackitt's Role

In response to the Grenfell Tower fire, Dame Judith Hackitt was appointed to chair the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety. Her mission was to identify the shortcomings in the current system and propose necessary reforms to enhance building safety. The Review's Interim Report was published in December 2017, followed by the final report, Building a Safer Future in May 2018.

The Golden Thread Concept

One of the key outcomes of Dame Judith Hackitt's review was the introduction of The Golden Thread of Information concept. This principle highlights the importance of maintaining a continuous, accurate, and up-to-date flow of information throughout a building's lifecycle. The Golden Thread ensures that all parties involved in the construction and maintenance of a building have access to the right information at the right time, enhancing transparency, accountability, and safety.
